Cold-brew coffee in a mason jar? If you’re looking for two more punches on your hipster card so you can get that free tin of bespoke mustache wax, look no further. If your search for an easy cold-brew method has yet to yield joy, consider your search over. I’ve used my French press to make cold-brew – it doesn’t make enough. I’ve used a nut milk bag – they’re a pain to clean. I’ve strained the soaked beans through a cheese cloth-lined strainer – just.. no. This is the easiest, cleanest way I’ve found to make cold-brew, and I can see no downsides.
The filter, which is stainless steel, comes with a stainless steel lid, and two rubber gaskets for creating a leak-proof seal. One seal fits the filter, one fits the lid, as far as I can tell, though you do not/can not use both at the the same time. Unless you’re traveling with your brewing coffee, I’m not sure you need either, but it’s a nice add-on, since one of the seals can be used on any jar.
The directions recommend using coarsely ground coffee, and I generally do grind my own, but I was eager to give this baby a trial run and I didn’t have a coffee I like for cold brew. So I was limited to what was available at my local Walmart. I ended up with pre-ground (the horror!) Starbucks Veranda blend (which I actually really like for cold brew), and it worked so beautifully that I just may embrace the convenience and consider it my standard for the summer. The finer-than-recommended grind did not result in fine particles seeping through the filter and making coffee sludge as I’d feared. The resultant brew is clean and delicious.
The filter rinses clean easily – if you’ve used a gold filter for a drip machine, you’ll be familiar with how it clings to some grounds – and seems really well-made. I’d veto the dishwasher for this, as things I really like get washed by hand as a rule, but it seems like it would be safe on the top rack.

When my wife asked me: “Where does all your money go?!” and I discovered that I was spending an obscene amount of money per month on cold brew from various outlets. I realized I should try to make my own cold brew and so I began just putting ground coffee into jars of water and letting it sit overnight. Initially this method worked but 1/3 of the brew was just soaked coffee-mud at the bottom and was a %#*@ to clean.

I wanted to take brewing more seriously so I found this filter and purchased it, intending to use it for larger volume brewing along with a glass gallon jar I purchased many, many pay periods ago the last time I had this idea of brewing my own but never followed through.

Bottom line: this filter works!

Note: I am *not* using it with the lid or silicone gasket it comes with, as the jar I am using is a non-standard size.

Also note: Obviously your mileage may vary based on the container you use, but the filter itself worked great! I just made sure not the fill the gallon jar completely to the top because otherwise the coffee-grind-mud would float on top of the water and rise above and contaminate the brew.

Cleaning is easy: personally I leave the filter inside the jar for as long as the coffee is there (not sure if this is what you’re supposed to do with cold brew but it still tastes great), when there is no more coffee left to pour I pull the filter out and any water left at the bottom just drips out. I turn this filter upside down over my garbage can and shake it slightly and the mud just falls right out, the rest rinses off in the sink. It also survives bottom-shelf dishwasher.

Using this cold brew filter has cut my coffee budget in half! Plus makes it very easy to serve delicious cold brew for breakfast. Also, when cold brewing because it takes longer than a coffee maker and is in contact with the water for hours, you would use *less* coffee grinds than if you put it in a coffee maker, but get increased caffeine concentration (caution!) and flavor.

I recommend this filter.

I like the micro fine screen and the fact that it’s short. I have a long one but this is better.

The 64oz Half Gallon Cold Brew Coffee and Tea Maker Stainless Steel Filter is exactly as advertised—high quality stainless steel, durable, makes less acidic coffee with a great taste (with good coffee beans). Some buyers of stainless steel filters complain in comments about rusting. This one does not rust! At least not in the past 1.5 year and likely it will not rust for a long time. Care must be taken in cleaning however to remove the coffee grounds and residue. Cleaning is easily accomplished by using a good kitchen brush with water inside and outside until grounds are removed. At that point, it can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher (the easiest way). This product is well worth its price and pays for itself in a short time because expensive quality brewed coffee doesn’t need to be purchased. If you want to save more money, brew another jar with the same grounds. The second batch with the same grounds will not be the same quality however. The coffee can be either heated to serve hot or iced to serve cold.
