It can inject the stream of water with a fair bit of pressure; if the pod is not very full, the stream has a tendency to push the grounds aside and not extract properly.

It will simply pump water up from the reservoir until there is none left. Well, it leaves a little bit of water in there. Once the coffee is finished brewing, it will automatically shut off.

It brews from coffee grounds, not coffee pods. Which I prefer; less waste and more choice of coffee beans.

While it comes with a neat travel mug, you can brew directly into any mug you like. If your mug is less than 17 cm tall, it’ll fit under there.

It’s super easy to cleanout. You can make clean up even easier by using paper filters and just dropping them into a compost bin when you’re done.

Because it is designed to be tall enough to accommodate a large travel mug under it, it does drip from a high height. This means that if you are brewing into a regular sized mug, it can get splashy. If you plan to use a regular-sized mug, I recommend sitting it on something to raise it up closer to the spout.

On that splashy note, because you brew directly into your mug, when you take it away you can still get some drips dropping out. It’s worth replacing your flask with some other mug just to catch the last few drips. It’ll certainly save finding a puddle on the counter later.

A small amount of sediment can still get through the reusable filter basket, so you won’t want to drink the last sip. This is pretty common for these filters. The alternative is paper filters; just use a paper filter instead of the reusable one and that’s the sediment sorted.

Just pop in a pod, throw a cup under the spout and tip down the lever. You’ll have excellent espresso in seconds. So easy.

There are two buttons, Espresso and Lungo. Lungo is Italian for “long”, it’s a long, or big, espresso. Just because there are two buttons doesn’t mean your coffee choices are limited though.

Want more coffee out? Just hold one of the buttons down and release it when you’ve had enough coffee out. Next time you press that button, it will pour the same amount, neat.

There’s not much waiting around for your coffee. As well as the brew itself being quick, it’s ready to go in about 30 seconds after powering it up.

The tank at the back holds 24 ounces of water. With a regular espresso being around 1 ounce, you won’t have to refill often.

You do need to be a bit careful with putting the pods in tough. Give them a little wiggle, and tip it back in there, to make sure they’re properly seated in there. If they’re not in right, you might crush the pod and make it unusable.

In college, you really just need basic amenities and appliances. The Mr. Coffee Drip Coffee Maker certainly is a basic machine, but damn does it make a good cup of joe.

When you first get it, you will definitely want to run water through it a few times because there is a bit of a plastic taste in it to begin with. After about five runs of water, the taste should be pretty much cleared.

The plastic is a bit thin and has some sharp edges to it. It does have a bit of a cheap feel to it, but then again, it is quite cheap. The sharp edges can easily be fixed with a file or some sandpaper.

It can also be a little tricky to jam the pot back under the little drip pin under the filter cone. The pin is just a little lower than I would like to make it easy to just slide the pot back in. If you’re not planning to sneak a mug before a brew is finished, it’s no problem to just take the little pin out though.

Mixpresso 6-Cup Drip Coffee Maker

Great coffee can certainly come from small machines.

And Isn’t a small coffee machine just what you need for a small college dorm room?

This is a small drip machine from Mixpresso and they don’t seem to quite know just how small it is. The Amazon title says it is a 6-cup machine but its description says it is a 5-cup machine. I can confirm it is actually a 5-cup machine.

It’ll make two or three big cups of coffee easily.

The glass carafe is certainly a dribbly one. I don’t understand why they couldn’t make the spout just a bit wider and longer to prevent spilling. This only becomes an issue when it’s completely full though; a half jug is just fine.

Overall, this little machine makes an absolute kick-ass brew.

Cuisinart DGB-550BKP1 Grind & Brew Automatic Coffeemaker

Now if there’s something I certainly love it is fresher than fresh coffee. That means freshly ground beans, freshly brewed, so I feel fresh in the morning.

The Cuisinart Grind & Brew has a sealed bean hopper, so they are actually sealed up while loaded into the machine.

It is super easy to program. You can set the amount to grind, how much coffee you want to make, how strong you want it, and when you want it. I like it ready as soon as I wake up.

And if I do happen to snooze in a little bit, it’s no problem, the Grind & Brew will keep the coffee warm for up to four hours.

The only shame to the design of this machine is the glass carafe. Wow is that a dribbly jug; there’s a knack to pouring with it. You probably want to fill your mug over a sink.

Aside from some coffee puddles, this is one great coffee maker.

So you’re looking for an espresso machine for college? An actual espresso machine, not a pod machine?

Well good espresso machines aren’t cheap. So let’s just start by jumping in the deep end. Here is the king of home, and in this case, college coffee makers.

It’s the Breville Barista Express. This elegant majesty of espresso sets the standard for espresso machines and surpasses it in one swoop.

Really, what part of PID temperature control, built-in burr grinder, and pressure gauges do you not understand? This mammoth’s sole purpose is to make amazing espresso, and it’s made by engineers who’s sole purpose is making amazing espresso.

While it’s a genuine feat of engineering, using it couldn’t be simpler.

Whack the portafilter into the grinder, dispense some ground beans, press it down with the tamper, slam the portafilter into the grouphead, and hit GO. Espresso in under a minute. I hope you’re excited.

Gaggia RI9380/46 Classic Pro Espresso Machine, Solid, Brushed Stainless Steel

I’m going to have to start right off the bat by saying I have a real soft spot for the Gaggia Classic. It’s so much more than just a great espresso machine. It’s a little side-project you can just dabble in occasionally.

What do I mean by that? The Gaggia Classic is famous in the coffee world for its upgradability. It is a simple and effective machine, it makes a great espresso, and you can make it even better if you’re willing.

The original Gaggia Classic came with an odd Panarello steam wand. Swapping that out for a Rancilio Silvia classic-style steam wand was upgrade 101. Gaggia took the hint and not the Classic comes with an upgraded steam wand as standard.

Other upgrade projects you could run on this machine include building in PID temperature controls, pressure and temperature gauges, and even cosmetic modifications such as replacing some of the plastic for stylish wood components.

That’s all before you even get down to making your espresso. This monster will heat up in seconds. You’ll be churning out espressos, lattes, cappuchinos, flat whites, and even hot chocolate with the steam wand.

Mr. Coffee – Café Barista, Espresso and Cappuccino Maker

Firstly, making espresso with this machine is damn easy.

You don’t even really need to tamp your grounds because it uses a pressurized portafilter filter basket. I recommend you still press them down at least a little.

You press one button, and boom, espresso!

The coffee is certainly Above Average. The pressurized portafilter basket helps to keep the espresso very consistent.

The milk frother is loud. Like, so loud you wonder what it’s actually doing. Can’t deny it does froth some milk though.

There are a lot of parts to clean. The milk container has 3 parts and the filter has 6 small parts which all need a wash eventually. While the filter usually just needs a rinse, the milk parts do need a soapy scrub.

While the milk frother might be a funny point, if you like plain espresso, this machine could be perfect for a quick cup to keep you going through rough study sessions.

Gaggia Brera Super Automatic Espresso Machine

The Brera is a straight-down-to-business bean to cup espresso machine. It’s super easy and intuitive to use. Best of all, you put coffee in, and espresso comes out.

For a bean to cup, this machine makes a really great coffee. You could serve this in a coffee shop, easily. The crema is great too; super frothy.

Tweaking your brew settings is straightforward, which isn’t always a given with bean to cup machines.

The panarello frothing wand makes frothing milk super easy. Just give the milk a blast, no particular technique. Couldn’t be simpler

The drip tray doesn’t have much capacity. It does need to be emptied fairly regularly. The same goes for the used grounds drawer; you’ll have to empty it after about four uses.

It can also take a bit of regular maintenance. The spout components need fairly regular cleaning. It’ll tell you when it needs to be descaled though.

Pod Coffee Machines For College

CHULUX Single Serve Coffee Maker, Stainless Steel Coffee Brewer

I am impressed with this little machine. It is a strong contender as an excellent budget pod machine.

It takes up hardly any space and pours a great coffee in no time.

I like the water level design in the water reservoir. It looks like a tiny set of four plastic steps, which makes the water reservoir look like a little swimming pool. It also tends to use all of the water for one brew, so you don’t have water just sitting in there.

If you like your cup of coffee black, then this machine makes your brew at the perfect drinking temperature. If you like to add milk or creamer, you might find it not warm enough. It might need an extra blast in the microwave if that’s the case.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Genio 2 Coffee Machine

Nothing beats easy coffee at the press of a button. Especially if it’s great coffee.

Not only does the Genio 2 make excellent coffee, but it also gives you the choice of making espressos, cappuccino, lattes, or any other kind of coffee just by choosing a different pod.

This tiny little machine is capable of producing up to 15 Bars of pressure, which is plenty for creating a frothy crema or fluffy milk in your brew.

It’s a bit of a shame that the Dolce Gusto pods are not as common as other brands. You might find them difficult to find in shops depending on where you live. Although reusable pods are available.

One improvement this coffee machine could use is a larger water reservoir. You will probably be refilling it quite often.

Nespresso Inissia Original Espresso Machine by Breville

Nespresso is the king of pod machines, and this time it is brought to you by Breville, the King of home espresso machines.

It looks almost identical to the Inissia which is produced by De’Longhi. While this might seem silly at first, it does let you pick sides. Which brand do you prefer?

The Inissia makes good coffee, quickly and easily. Just pop in a pod, throw down the lever, and hit Go.

I am amazed at the size of this machine. It is absolutely tiny. You will have no problem finding a spot for it on your countertop.

If you are running a bunch of coffees one after the other, you might notice that you do not always get the same amount out. It’s not a huge difference, but still a bit strange.

While the brew buttons are reprogrammable, there does seem to be a funny bug where they lose their programming after a while. It’s easily reprogrammed, but it’s strange that it would forget how you’ve told it to brew after a while.

Mueller Single Serve Pod Compatible Coffee Maker Machine With 4 Brew Sizes, Rapid Brew Technology with Large Removable 48 oz Water Tank

This is one excellent value little pod machine. Certainly, a nice option if you’re looking for great coffee while on a budget.

It makes a good strong cup of coffee.

With a 48 ounce water tank, you will easily get at least 4 really big bugs out of this before you have to refill the water. Perfect for a long study sesh when you just want to churn out the coffee and not prep the machine. That said, you can only really fit a regular sized mug in it.

It does take a bit longer to brew than other pod machines. At about 2 minutes per brew, it’s still a quick cup, but there are quicker options.

Single Serve Coffee Makers For College

Keurig K-Mini Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer

From hitting the brew button, in just over a minute, you will have a lovely freshly brewed cup of joe. This little machine is just primed and ready to go whenever you want it.

This tiny machine is only 5 inches wide. Perfect for a small dorm room. And doesn’t it look cool?

While narrow, you can still fit medium-sized travel mugs under it up to 7 inches tall.

It doesn’t hold a huge amount of water is one downside. You will have to refill it for each brew.

For such a small machine, it certainly does like to shout when it’s making a coffee.

Chefman InstaCoffee Max Single Serve Coffee Maker

This is a neat little machine.

It’s more than just a pod machine. It’s a drip machine too. But it’s even more than that, you can even make tea with it.

it comes with a reusable filter basket that you can fill with ground coffee or loose leaf tea. Now that’s versatile.

If you like your coffee black, or tea without milk, it brews at the perfect drinking temperature. If you like milk in your brew, you might find it a little on the cold side.

There is plenty of space under the spout for a travel mug. This does also lend itself to being a bit splashy when you’re using a regular sized mug though.

Sboly Single Serve Coffee Maker Brewer for K-Cup Pod & Ground Coffee

It’s nice to not be tied down to a single type of coffee pod. Sboly have included a reusable filter basket so you can brew with ground coffee too.

Maintaining this little coffee factory couldn’t be easier. After you’ve made your brew, just the two buttons on the side to fire up the auto cleaning function and it’ll actually clean itself.

No need to keep an eye on it either, it has a built-in auto shut off. So it’ll just turn itself off when it’s finished.

The low price of this little machine makes it an excellent contender as a great budget option.

It can get quite splashy as it brews. I recommend using a tall mug.

Being a single-serve machine, you do have to refill it after every brew. When you get small machines, they just don’t hold as much water.

Basic Coffee Makers For College

Bodum Chambord French Press

Everyone loves a french press!

The french press must be the first stop for any first time home coffee brewer. They couldn’t be simpler. Dump some ground coffee in, add water, leave it for 4 minutes, and press the plunger down.

For such a simple little gadget there is still a lot of scope to get quite technical with your brew. You can seriously up your french press game by ensuring you use a coffee to water ratio that’s right for you, measuring the temperature of your water, letting it bloom. The options go on.

When making your precious coffee, you want to make it in something precious. A french press might not vary much in how they work, but their looks certainly can.

Bodum have absolutely nailed it with the sleek and sophisticated, yet still beautifully minimalistic design.

The glass carafe is removable to make clean up easy. There is even an option to get a shatterproof glass carafe.

The Glass carafe isn’t the only part that makes clean up easy. The mesh filter at the bottom of the plunger easily disassembles, so now you never need to get old bits of coffee stuck in there.

There is a size perfect for everyone. Choose between a 12 ounce, 17 ounce, 34 ounce, and 51 ounces options. You will definitely be able to make enough for everyone.

AeroPress

The AeroPress is quite a new addition to the coffee world. Some will describe it as a giant syringe, others might describe it as an engine piston and cylinder.

While it is advertised as an espresso maker, it is not truly espresso by definition. Espresso is typically made at pressures of around 9 Bar. The AeroPress only produces up to around 0.7 Bar.

Although if you press it down inhumanely hard, you might get a little bit of crema. Just be careful you don’t knock it over.

The AeroPress may be the best travel coffee maker. It’s very small, compact, and portable.

What’s more, it makes a damn good coffee. Really.

Many people like to brew with this little thing using what they call “the inverted method”.

You remove the filter end and pull the plunger down to make a little plastic cup. Fill it with coffee and water. Just leave it to brew there like you would with a french press.

After a bit of brewing, screw the filter firmly on, with a filter paper in it of course. Tip the AeroPress over on top of your mug, and press that plunger down.

Be ready to be surprised how good AeroPress coffee is.

Zulay Classic Stovetop Espresso Maker

If you are an espresso fan, then surely you have heard of a Moka Pot.

These classic little coffee gadgets are without a doubt the cheapest option to make a strong espresso-like coffee at home. I say that because technically it’s not espresso; it doesn’t produce a high enough pressure to make actual espresso. It certainly does make a damn strong cup of coffee.

Despite how they might look, they are super easy to use.

They come in three parts. There is the top and bottom halves which you see when you first look at the little pot. There is a third part inside, it’s a little metal cone-shaped filter basket which sits inside the lower half.

To make yourself one damn great cup of coffee; first, pour water into the lower half up to just below the little valve built into the wall of the pot. Sit the cone-shaped filter basket into the lower half and fill it with ground coffee. Do not press the coffee grounds down.

Screw the top half on firmly. Sit the pot on your stove and turn it on to full heat

Now it’s heating up, you cannot leave it. Wait for it to make a big splurting noise of the last of the coffee bubbling up into the top chamber and quickly take it off the heat.

Now just pour yourself an amazing coffee and discover why Moka Pots have been loved worldwide for decades.

Stainless Steel Coffee Filter Cone

A filter cone takes drip coffee right back to basics. You don’t need a machine to do it for you. You can pour all by yourself.

Making coffee using a filter cone is called “pour over” coffee and it couldn’t be easier. This little filter cone doesn’t even need a paper filter.

You can brew directly into a mug or into a bug jug to share, just like with regular drip coffee.

Just sit the cone on top of your mug or jug, fill the cone with ground coffee, and gently pour hot water over the coffee grounds. You’ll have a beautiful brew in no time.
