I purchased the Bunn BXB Velocity Brew coffee maker to replace my old 1989 Bunn which started leaking at the bottom. Yes, 1989. My coffee pot was only a few years younger than me and I loved that thing. But, it was leaking so I thought it was done for and ordered this Bunn to replace it.

The first two I received were either broken or scratched so I sent them back. The third time was a charm though, because the third one that arrived wasn’t broke, scratched, or had anything else wrong with it that I could tell. Also, no burning smell like other people have had. That’s not normal imo and if you have that problem, I recommend sending it back.

We got it set up and so far it’s working as a Bunn should. I would like to note though, that after the initial set up, quite a bit of water kept dripping from the nozzle. I ran another pot of water through and it stopped the dripping. I haven’t had anymore issues with it dripping from the nozzle.

If you are new to Bunn you should know…
    – These are not like your typical standard coffee makers. I’ve seen a lot of complaints and low ratings in the reviews because some people weren’t quite aware of what they were purchasing. You shouldn’t give bad ratings when the product is doing what it’s supposed to do. Which brings me to my next few points…
    – A Bunn coffee maker holds and heats water in the tank 24/7. That is how you have coffee or hot water in 2-3 minutes. I have used a 1989 Bunn for many years. I assure you, it’s safe, and you can leave the house or sleep without unplugging it. The only time we turn it off is when we’re not going to be home for a couple days. As the water heats, it also evaporates, so if you don’t use it for several days the water level can get low.
    – Even though it heats water 24/7 it doesn’t significantly increase the electric bill. To check this, I went to my energy dashboard on FPL and took a look at my daily electric usage since I was without a Bunn for a week while I waited on a new one to come in. There’s no difference in electricity usage during the week I had no Bunn plugged in.
    – Because it heats the water 24/7, this isn’t the best coffee pot for someone who doesn’t plan to use it every day or every other day. Again, the water will slowly evaporate.

    Why I love my Bunn…
    – I’m not a morning person and I have hot coffee within a couple minutes. It’s super fast compared to your standard coffee maker.
    – It keeps the water hot but not boiling hot so I can drink my coffee as soon as it’s made.
    – You get out as much water as you put in. Perfect for when I only need a small amount of hot water.

What I use my Bunn for other than coffee…
    – Hot water for tea & hot chocolate
    – Hot water for cleaning
    – Hot water for cooking (especially bullion cubes or other powdered sauce mixes that need to be mixed with hot water)

    What I don’t like about my Bunn…
    – Emptying out the tank isn’t fun
    – Cleaning the tank isn’t fun either
    – Both are much more time consuming than cleaning a standard coffee pot.
    – With this newer model I don’t like that the nozzle that came with the coffee maker comes out so fast you can’t brew decaf. That’s why people have coffee grounds shooting out of the basket. It’s a huge failure on the company’s part for this even being an issue. I should be able to brew decaf without having to worry about an over flow or spending money on another part. My old Bunn brewed decaf and finely ground coffee with no problems so I expected the same with this one.

You can order another nozzle for decaf or more finely ground coffee so the water comes out slower and doesn’t over flow the basket, but that’s the nozzle that should’ve been included with the coffee maker to begin with.

Overall, I’m happy with this Bunn so far, though I have zero faith it will last anywhere near as long as my old one. Hopefully, for as much as I paid for this thing, it’ll meet my expectations, but if not I have a backup as I had my husband fix my 1989 Bunn and it’s now back in perfect working condition 🙂

    ***UPDATE 1/11/18***

I planned on doing an update at one year, but our mobile home in the lower Florida Keys got a direct hit from Irma and I was pretty sure my Bunn died. Miraculously, the house and my Bunn survived! The house shook so violently, my microwave was on the floor when I got home, but this guy didn’t move an inch! Even the carafe was still in place!

Even after all the trauma my poor Bunn went through, it survived the storm. It’s still working great and is still in perfect condition. No funny smells and I’ve never once had an over flow, even when brewing decaf Foldgers. And that’s with using the standard nozzle that came with the unit. I also haven’t had any issues with the nozzle dripping water when it shouldn’t be. Actually, I haven’t had any issues. It works perfectly.

I have my routine. I pour my water in to brew my coffee. I get my coffee cup, and add the cream and sugar. Stir. By the time I do this, my coffee is usually ready to be poured. Just to give you an idea of how quick this thing is!

Also, I know a few people have asked, but my husband and I cannot remember how he fixed my 1989 Bunn from leaking. It’s still kicking though 🙂

If you’re a person who does not like to read long reviews, this thing’s awesome, just buy it. For everyone else who is not a millennial and has an attention span of more than a Twitter comment… Read on. I’ve been in business for 25 years, we’re in finance and we drink a lot of coffee. Commercial offices generally have contracts with local purveyors that provide the machine for free as long as you buy cases of pre-measured coffee. Since 1997 we have had a bunn commercial three burner coffee maker. Now in fairness, even though this is made by the same company you really can’t compare. The two. One is a commercial solid metal unit that is designed to run continuously. The other is a really high quality residential unit.

For me, I’m a coffee fiend… I drink at least a pot or more per day myself. At home, I have a technovorem mocha master ( look it up) these things cost $400 or more and are regarded as the best coffee maker/ pour over unit in the world. I believe they’ve won some awards to that effect. I’m not going to buy another one of these for another room in my house, after COVID I moved my personal operation out of my office and into the house. I set up a station and was going to buy a commercial bunn machine ( single burner) and I came across this machine in the suggestions. I was extremely skeptical, I was positive I was buying a piece of junk but I’ve had it now for several weeks and it is nothing short of amazing. It’s exactly the same functionality as the one from the office.

It’s very important to understand that the reason people love bunn coffee makers is because they have a very clever method of preheating water so you never really have to wait for a full pot of coffee. Basically, you get the machine and fill it with two full pots of water. The instructions say to turn the on the heating elements and wait about 15 minutes. Give it 20 just for good measure… You put your empty pot under the water outlet and closed the lid. It will drain out one full pot and leave the next one in its place to become heated and ready to serve. Here’s the cool part, you never turn off the coffee maker, just the heating plate. When you’re ready to make another pot, you pour cold water into the machine and immediately scolding hot water comes out from the superheated reservoir and makes your pot of coffee. The cold water you just poured in replaces the hot water and the cycle starts over again. No other coffee maker on the market does this. If you’re using this in the morning before you walk out the door to go to work… This thing will blow you away. It’ll make a pot of coffee in a couple of minutes versus 10 or so from some of the competitors. The best part is, like most things on Amazon, this is a prime item. If you don’t like it, return it. It costs you nothing and I think you’ll be thrilled. One last thought… They have this genius little invention on the lid of the coffee pot. It’s a 3-in extension or so that directs the liquid when you’re pouring it out into your cup. Anyone is poured coffee on the floor, on their hand, or any place other than a cup knows that it is difficult to fill your coffee cup straight from the pot. This amazing little add-on completely eliminates drips and spills. Definitely check it out

The Bunn coffee maker is an excellent coffee maker coffee is rich and full of flavor and it makes an entire pot in almost the time you can make one cup with a Keurig. Awesome machine. I love it.

I love Bunn products. This coffee maker is the second one I have used. The first one lasted 12 years and that was used every day!

Early in the game but so far so good. A little getting used to. Not a big fan of water being heated 24/7 but I adjusted for me as I get up, turn it on, burner plate included with full pot of water in it to warm things and walk dog for 15 minutes so he can do his thing and then I load pot and let coffeemaker do its thing. It makes a full pot in a heartbeat. One just has to remember to turn it off without the two hour kill switch built in. The coffee is hot but I wish there was a warmer plate adjustment as I tend to put coffee down while doing things and it gets cold, wish I could just heat it up a tad more at the start. I would recommend getting the proper filter basket as I have two from previous coffeemaker and I know they would overflow because this guy makes a pot very quickly.

Appears to be the same design as the long lasting unit it is replacing.

I decided to buy another Bunn Classic after going through 4 different drip coffee makers over the years. I do miss the temperature as well as the fast brew cycle of the coffee, but it brews so fast. I’ve had to go through several brew cycles to get the flavor of coffee I’m used to – using almost the same amount of grounds I used in my old 14-cup drip maker to the 10 cups in the Bunn. The features of this Bunn are still the same, although the unit is not as well-built or sturdy as they used to make them.

Works great! However, be careful when unpacking the Coffee maker. The Carafe was not packed very well and was in the box/coffee maker loose. As we removed the coffee maker from the box, the carafe fell out and hit the counter where it shattered into what seemed like a hundred pieces!! Fortunately, we still had the carafe from our previous BUNN coffee maker, so we used it.
Note; It appeared as though the box had been previously unpacked?!

I bought this 8 years ago and it is still giving me consistently excellent drip coffee every morning. I originally bought this because it reminded me of the old coffee pots we used to use in the Navy, where the water just stays hot in the chamber and makes your pot of coffee in minutes. The one I had prior to this took forever and wasn’t as hot. With this one you get piping hot coffee in minutes. I did find early on that it brews so fast that it came out a little weak, which I solved for by using 2 filters instead of 1, forcing the water to take a (slightly) longer journey through the beans. It’s still the fastest coffee machine I’ve ever owned but that’s my one pro tip 😆 otherwise, I’d this thing ever does need to be replaced, I’ll be replacing it with another one just like it.
