I first used a Moka pot when I stayed in an Airbnb in Rome. I had seen an Italian guy on instagram using it, so I was happy to have the chance to try it for myself. The best way I can describe the result is that the coffee from the Moka tastes how the coffee grounds smell.
I have always LOVED the smell of ground coffee beans, but coffee has never tasted like that smell- until now. I drink this stuff with an equal amount of warm whole milk and a little sugar and it is absolutely delightful.
For those of you wondering what size to get, I got the “3 cup” size. If you drink coffee like an Italian, you could probably make 2 of those tiny espresso cups with this pot. It fills my standard coffee mug about a third of the way. It’s more concentrated than American style coffee, but not quite as concentrated as true espresso. The basket for the grounds holds about three tablespoons of grounds.
I use medium roast pre ground coffee from Trader Joe’s and it works just fine and tastes delicious. The snobs will say to use fresh ground coffee ground to a specific grind size. You can do that if you want. But if you’re not a coffee snob, you can skip all that and just use a decent quality ground coffee and you’ll be fine!

So, I opened this up and there is loose sharp pieces of metal all around the inside of the pot from the construction process. So you will want to take it apart and thoroughly rinse it out and make sure the metal shards are not still in there before making a pot of coffee. Now, with that said the coffee this makes and look of the pot itself is great! I definitely like it a lot and it’s now in my top 3 methods to brew coffee to be honest. The taste is a bit stronger than the other two methods I prefer more, but this is amazing as well!
All in all I recommend it, but do makes sure to inspect it for metal dust and pieces and rinse/clean it out before you use it.

I got the 2-cup Tricolore Moka Express. Bialleti rate their pots in espresso servings. My wife and I use the Moka when we want to make milk drinks. A 2-cup machine is just right to make an American-style coffee for one person, or 2 people to have an espresso drink. If you dilute the shots with water and milk, this machine can easily serve a small coffee to 2 Americans at once.
The 2-cup Tricolore Moka Expres has a design that’s a blend of retro and contemporary. It looks gorgeous alongside a classic KitchenAid blender if you like a slightly retro kitchen. It’s an absolute piece of art, and it makes good coffee.
Moka coffee historically was quite bitter due to boiling pre-ground dark Italian coffee quite hard. This lead people to call it “espresso”. Moka is not brewed under much pressure, so it’s not true espresso. What you get is a very concentrated small serving of coffee which draws strong flavors from the bean. If I brew the same coffee back to back in the Moka versus an Aeropress, the Aeropress is smoother and more balanced, but the Moka explodes with flavor like an espresso shot. They’re very different experiences.
My recipe for light roast: Grind coffee medium-coarse as for Aeropress. Put freshly boiled water in the base, use a towel to close. Heat pot over medium-low heat with lid open. Watch until pot sputters. Closw lid and run cold tap water down the side to arrest boiling. Pour into one tall espresso cup or 2 mugs for 2 peoole. For black coffee, dilute with water to taste. For milk drinks, do the same, and top with milk. Frother optional but recommended. I do think even for 1 person, diluting with a little water really makes the Moka’s coffee better.
I love the Moka Pot. They’re very beautiful so you want to display it on your shelf. They’re a little finicky if you want to get the best coffee from them, especially from lighter roasts. The Moka was designed for pre-ground dark roasts, which brew much more easily but produce an offensively bitter coffee to my tastes. If you instead use a good fresh ground specialty coffee and manage your heat, you can get an “espresso-like” cup for a fraction of the cost. Great for small shots or milk drinks. Highly recommended.

Bought this as a birthday present in an attempt to make coffee like we’d had in Italy.
Firstly the quality is impressive and the finish to the red paint is perfect.
Glad a paid for this rather than a cheaper version. The coffee is really nice, makes a great latte.
It unscrew for cleaning and really only needs a swill.
We use it on a gas hob so bought a diffuser for it to sit on.
