Key Features to Consider

I’ve never owned an espresso machine before, so I don’t have anything to compare it to. I really enjoy espresso (and coffee in general), and this machine makes tasty bean juice. For context, my go-to drink is an americano, and my wife loves a good latte (this machine is capable of both). Here’s my list of pros/cons and suggested extra tools to make this machine shine.

    Pros:
-Very easy to use – I still haven’t opened the instructions, and have no intention to
-Simple controls – No fancy LED screens or anything. Very straightforward.
-Heats quickly – both the espresso and steam wand
-Looks great – It’s small and fits on the counter nicely

    Cons:
-The included pressurized portafilter holds 11-12g of grounds in the largest basket (seems like a small amount because it kinda is…)
-The water tank location isn’t great, and it’s on the small side. You have to purposely check the back of the machine to see the water level. There have already been several times that it’s run dry on me… My fault, but it’s still a con due to the design IMHO.
-The steam wand is just ok… If you leave the outer sleeve on it, you get nothing but large foam. I suggest taking that off and working on angling whatever vessel you are using to try and create a vortex. This gives you some microfoam and hot milk, but I’ve never come close to anything that will create the latte art. Still tastes good, but the advertising is misleading.

It’s a good unit, and with a few extra tools, it makes really good espresso:
-I suggest…. Scratch that…. You NEED a better tamper – specifically a calibrated tamper (around $15-25). They aren’t that expensive, and the plastic tool that it comes with should just be thrown away.
-I found a bottomless (not pressurized) portafilter that holds more grounds (straight from that Chinese site – under $20). This was a HUGE improvement to the quality and strength of espresso.
-Puck screen helped the channeling. This was cheap ($6 from that Chinese site) and make a noticeable difference.
-A portafilter dosing funnel will drastically cut down on the mess while allowing you to get in a full dose of grounds. There are several on this site – I suggest one that doesn’t sit in the portafilter, rather a magnetic one that sits on top.
-Last, but certainly not least (should be first or second….) get a decent scale that does gram measurement, and a decent burr grinder. Without these essential tools, each cup is a guessing game where the looser is your taste buds.

I purchased the Gevi for everyday home use and also purchased the De’Longhi Stilosa for once a week use use at my girlfriend’s house as the De’Longhi was on sale for $99. I was off for three weeks over christmas so I’ve used both machines enough to give the following review and comparison.

Gevi Pros: Heats up quickly and the frothing feature is also ready very quickly. You can custom set the timer for single and double dose (buy you are limited to how long). Best instruction manual EVER! The water container is super stylish, the handle is like a work of art and I kind of enjoyed refilling it 🙂 Registering the purchase gets you a 2nd year of warranty. Cons: The heating table for your cups never gets hot because it’s PLASTIC, not metal as described in the instruction book. The machine automatically turns off after a short time so even if the warming top was metal, it would turn off and never stay warm. You are very limited to the height of coffee mug and you can’t remove the drip tray without water pouring all over the counter during a pull (yes I understand the machines are made more for “shot-sized” glasses or cups). The frothing arm is very short, leaving you limited to the frothing container size and depth. It is also difficult to clean the internal portion of the frothing arm as the part seems to be made of plastic and the milk solidifies to it. You can’t aim the frothing arm in towards the drip tray for cleaning. You can’t see the water level without opening the container and looking inside or removing it. The double-dose portafilter insert is small, I’m not sure how you can follow the instructions for 14 grams of grind and get it to fit? The aluminum drip tray vibrates and makes noise like crazy when pulling your shot. I press my finger against it because it’s that noisy.

The De’longhi Stilosa takes a minute longer to heat up. I heat my mug with water in the microwave for 1.5 minutes and by then the DS is ready. My mug fits under the portafilter because the drip tray insert is removable! Timing your doses is only manual. I thought this would be a problem for me but each home I’m at has a clock with seconds in the kitchen 😁 The DS has a metal warming area that actually gets hot! 🥵 After I pull my dose I put my mug on the warming tray until I finish frothing my milk. The frothing arm is longer and larger than the Gevi and the interior portion appears to be silicone and it cleans effortlessly. It does take about 45 seconds for the frothing feature to be ready after pulling a dose (the Gevi is a higher wattage) and then takes 40 seconds to heat my 105g of cold milk to 150 degrees. There is a window to see when you are low on water. The portafilter is well made, much heavier than the Gevi, and the single and double inserts can be completely taken apart for cleaning, which the Gevi cannot. The double insert is also deeper than the Gevi, allowing for more grind if you need it.

I haven’t noticed a difference in flavor but I have noticed that the DS seems to make a “silkier” milk froth. Sorry, Gevi, you’re going back and I’ll be purchasing another Stilosa. Longevity will remain to be seen.

Easy to use, easy to clean although the grinds can sort of make a mess where you twist them in, a quick wipe with a paper towel is all you need. The machine works so fast to brew a single or double, but my only complaint is the temperature seems to run low and you don’t always get the hottest or most consistent cup possible compared to a more expensive machine. Great for a single person with a small kitchen/apartment and the white color looks nice and modern enough to blend in.
