Buying Guide: Manual Coffee Grinder with Ceramic Burrs

Why Choose a Manual Coffee Grinder

Manual coffee grinders offer several advantages over electric grinders. They allow you to have more control over the grind size, resulting in a more consistent and flavorful cup of coffee. They are also portable and don’t require electricity, making them perfect for camping trips or traveling. Additionally, manual coffee grinders tend to be more affordable compared to their electric counterparts.

Factors to Consider

Burr Type

Ceramic burrs are known for their durability and ability to retain the coffee’s original flavor during grinding. They also do not generate heat, which can affect the taste of the coffee. The manual coffee grinder being considered features ceramic burrs, ensuring a high-quality grind.

Grind Settings

Look for a manual coffee grinder with adjustable grind settings. This allows you to have full control over the coarseness or fineness of the coffee grounds, depending on your brewing method. The coffee mill being reviewed comes with an easy-to-use grind control, providing the flexibility to customize your grind.

Materials and Construction

Consider the materials used in the construction of the grinder. Stainless steel is a durable and corrosion-resistant material, ensuring the grinder’s longevity. The manual grinder in question is made with stainless steel and ceramic, promising durability and quality.

I like It, it grinds really well, in different courses too. Really like that the jars came with a lid. Plus it gives my arms a workout.

I cold brew my coffee, and generally
purchase 1# bags of beans and grind and brew that 1# at a time in my Toddy. I purchased a Shardor electric coffee grinder from Amazon when my local Trader Joe’s moved their coffee grinders into the back where an employee had to grind your coffee for you. No bueno.

The Shardor works for 3 minutes, then has to cool down for 30 minutes. This is not enough time to grind a pound of beans, it adds unnecessary time to my grinding and brewing schedule, and is just massively annoying. I have been using my spice grinder for part of the beans. That has an exceptionally short cord that keeps coming unplugged, it has no capacity, and it’s messy. So I decided to get a manual grinder and I read up on them. I wanted to be able to easily and neatly grind enough beans manually so that the Shardor would grind the rest within the 3-minute limit. This manual grinder will do it.

I like the capacity of this grinder, the fact that it’s a ceramic burr, it’s easy to clean, comes with a second jar with lid, and with a very nice brush. However, it is slower, and harder to turn, which I expected but it will do the job in a fairly reasonable amount of time, but possibly with more effort than I would like to put out. The one thing I really do not like is the knob clearance on the handle. I have child-sized hands, and I have to hold the knob by my fingertips, otherwise, my knuckles brush the handle with every turn, this will ultimately cause a blister. It also makes it harder for me to turn the handle, as I am a small senior citizen, that’s not a plus. I would give it 3 stars because of the handle issue. It will do the job for you and seems to be well-made and is very affordable. Adjustment to the grind is fairly easy, but won’t be precise as with more expensive models, which would also probably require less elbow grease. I would recommend this with those reservations listed.

I really like this manual grinder. It has a ceramic burr, so it seems durable, and the whole thing comes apart nicely and is easy to clean. The capacity of the chamber is pretty large, and it comes with 2 jars, which is pretty handy. It does take some time to grind through the beans, so be prepared to spend a few minutes grinding away with a full chamber of beans.

My only complaint is that it’s hard to get beans ground in a consistent way once the grinder has been disassembled. The screw lock for the fineness of the grinder isn’t really measureable, so you have to eyeball where to set the screw for the next time you use it.

This is a good little grinder for the price. Never know when you’re gonna accidentally buy beans instead of pre-ground, and this is nice to have on hand.

  5. Dina I.

This past June I had the most memorable cup of coffee I’ve ever had in my life at a coffee shop in Astoria, Oregon. When I got back home I wanted to recreate that cup, so I found out what coffee roaster supplied the coffee shop and ordered a bag of beans.

Meanwhile, I’d heard the best grind of beans for the tastiest, highest quality cup comes from burr grinders, and I thought those special beans deserved the proper treatment. I didn’t want to commit to an electric grinder, so I picked this one based on looks and reviews.

I have to say, manually grinding beans is certainly a labor of love. It takes about 8-10 minutes to grind enough beans to fill the filter in my 12oz Moka pot. It’s really a pain in the butt, to be frank. The grinder itself is fine, though, this isn’t a remark on the product itself as much as it is a remark on the process involved.

Good things about the grinder – the coarseness is easily adjusted. It’s easy to grip and has rubber in the right places to help you keep it stable while laboring away. The extra sealable jar is smart and handy for grinding beans in advance and keeping the grinds fresh. Another positive, if you are someone who enjoys meditative mindfulness and sensory enjoyment – this grinder really does bring you fully into the process; you can feel the grinding in your hands, hear the crunching, and the smell of those ground beans is right there in your face. It’s quite a round experience if you’re into that.

Me, I don’t get into ASMR, or need mindfulness in this form every day. I need a pot of espresso every day to function, and this is too much work for daily use. And I absolutely couldn’t imagine using this for a medium grind 12-cup pot of drip coffee; it would take like 20 minutes to make enough grinds for your filter basket.

Bottom line is it’s an effective, solid product for when you have time, energy, and high quality beans that warrant this special of treatment, or if you’re a person into mindfulness and sensory input.
