Ordered this instead of spending more money on a high quality automated burr grinder. I live alone and mainly make a small batch of pour over coffee every morning using this. The grounds are consistent and the grinder is heavy and well-constructed.

I’ve had this grinder for about a year now. Here’s what I love about it:

    1. Very very consistent grinds. I haven’t had to tweak anything after the initial dial-in process for a new set of beans.
    2. Numbered settings avoid having to carefully count clicks, unlike some other grinders.
    3. Super easy to fully disassemble for detailed cleaning – no tools required. This might be my favorite feature aside from maybe grinding speed.
    4. Small size but good capacity for one person (25-30g beans).
    5. Very smooth and quick grinding thanks to the excellent bearings and high quality burr.
    6. Quiet! Can use without disturbing anyone else in the house, especially when they are sleeping.

The only downsides are that fine grinds can get a little tedious (> 45 seconds) if you are targeting espresso-fine grounds, and that grinding large amounts of coffee can get tiring (>50g). It is perfect for pour overs, Aeropress, or French press for 1-2 people especially considering how long it will last – likely a decade or more – compared to cheaper electric burr grinders.

The only other minor ding I can give it is the wooden handle comes with a bit of a rough finish. If you’re at all handy this is easily fixed with a little bit of sandpaper and an oil-based wipe on poly (or even Tung or linseed oil). With a proper finish the wooden handle is quite striking, and provides a nice gripping surface.

Seriously this is one of my favorite purchases of the last few years. It easily outclasses the other electric burr grinders I’ve owned ($40-$100), none of which ever lasted more than a few years. I’ve definitely spent way more on those total than this one, and there’s really nothing that should break on this grinder any time soon. Even with very heavy usage.

The only other thing worth mentioning is that the “Ross Droplet Technique” works really well with this grinder. Definitely helpful if you live in a dry climate or you notice some grounds sticking to the bottom after a grinding session.

I love the quality of the grind, a consistent and fast grind for not a lot of money. The handle is great and long enough that I find it easy to grind even at fine settings – I like the folding for storage; makes it much easier to find a place for it to sit on my counter.
The instructions are a bit tricky at first, but you can find third-party guides for grind size online pretty easily.
Cleaning after use is easy with the included brush, but you will need to disassemble to really clean the burrs and interior parts. This is not difficult, but is a bit fiddly – a once-a-month thing.
I find it can grind much finer than I need for my moka pot, or pour-over, even for light roasts I can get it fine enough to easily over-extract. I don’t have an espresso machine, so I haven’t tested this, but my guess is if that’s your main use case you would want one of their espresso grinders to get more control over particle size in the smallest size grinds.

Overall this is a pleasure to use – one of those tools that feels solid and super sorted in your hand. I am sure if you spend more you might get more, but this has got to be well inside the 80:20 rule.

Now, I’m not saying I base all my reviews on the weight of the item in question BUT there’s no doubt this device is made of high quality metal. And the tooling of the pieces is fantastic. I feel quite fancy using this in the morning, no matter how bleary-eyed I am.

This was my first impression. Sadly I have had to review and downgrade after less than 6 months. Read on. I have a much cheaper ceramic grinder which was my first step on the ladder of fresh coffee grinding. It was OK but quite hard to use. Once I realised this was a journey I wanted to pursue I did my research and the 1Zpresso JX-S Manual grinder was consistently recommended for everything (except really fine dialling in of grinds for espresso machines). As I am only interested in Aeropress and French press coffee this grinder is perfect for me.

I find it takes very little time and effort compared to my ceramic grinder and overall I am really impressed with it. If you are not going to spend hundreds or thousands of pounds on an espresso machine then I really recommend this highly. It is a quality bit of kit and you get much more value for your money with a manual grinder than an electric one at this price point.

And here is my foolproof Aeropress recipe:

11g fine/medium freshly ground coffee. 200 g not quite boiling water. Boil your kettle, then once it has turned itself off start your weighing and grinding. The water will have cooled down enough by the time you are ready. I don’t bother with the inverted aeropress method – simply use two paper filters and that will stop the water from seeping through.

Pour the water onto the coffee in side the aeropress and stir for a few seconds with a spoon. Then put the plunger on just a little bit to create a vacuum and stop the water passing through the filter. Leave for 2 mins / 2 mins 30 seconds then plunge slowly. A total infusion time of about 3 minutes.

If it is too bitter then grind the coffee beans a bit coarser or reduce the overall infusion time.

I don’t much like the fruity/acid coffees so tend to go for a medium to medium dark roasts which do not have those acid notes – I look for flavours such as caramel, toffee, chocolate, spices or nuts. Enjoy!

AFTER LESS THAN 6 MONTHS: sorry to say, I have loved how easy this is to use but the rubber grip has come loose and moves around the main body making it harder to use. I am really surprised and disappointed that I paid so much money for what I though was a premium product only for this to happen. To make matters worse, I can get a refund from Amazon but as it is an international returns label I haver to pay the postage and claim it back. What a load of hassle. Had I know all this I would never have bought the item through Amazon. I will look for another grinder now. Such a shame.

This grinder, in my opinion, far superior to the spinning blade grinders that don’t control the size of the grind. With this hand grinder you get very good consistency. I love the feel of the grinder while using. The handle length provides excellent leverage without being unwieldy so that anyone can use it effortlessly. The size is convenient for traveling in our RV. We like strong coffee and therefore need to fill it twice to grind the 35-40 grams of beans but it is super easy to empty and refill. I highly recommend this grinder.

I have been using this grinder for some time now since I forgot to review it. I love this coffee grinder, I can never go back to grinding any other way. We get locally roasted beans which tend to be oily, I had to return an electric Oxo grinder because it could not grind the beans without getting clogged & making a static cling mess all over my counters. I have never experienced such problems with this grinder. While I do grind the night before, since we use a programmable brewer, the taste & freshness can not be compared to any other way of grinding. I love the accuracy and difference of flavor profile with just a click of the dial, enabling us to never have bitter or sour tasting coffee. It’s quick & effortless to grind (even with arthritic wrists) and has become a relaxing evening ritual for me. Knowing that a good cup of coffee awaits me in the morning makes getting up a whole lot easier!

I’ve been using this product for the past couple of years since I bought it. I find this generally impressive in design and overall durability. However, it is not without some of its quirky caveats that are a bit unpleasant.

Let’s get cracking at the pros and cons of this product:

+ All parts are easily accessible, and take only the provided brush in order to clean out most of the ground coffee and other gunk that gets inside the burr. You can also use a paper towel to do some finishing touches on the entire product since the brush won’t get to every nook-and-cranny, and then use the soft-bristled brush to wipe off any potential residue that paper towels tend to leave behind.

+ Rubber grip enables the user to grind any particular roast level of coffee and fineness of grind with little difficulty.

+ Includes a dual-sided brush that has a coarse bristled side and a soft-bristled side.

+ Attractive aesthetic design that just gives the product a nice touch to the overall build quality of the product.

+ Simple design for the burr mechanism makes product maintenance insanely easy to do.

+ Grounds container has a screw fit.

+ Great customer support at least when you inquire about their product.

    + Relatively quiet and compact.

    + Overall great durability.

    – Price. Number one thing that you see right away. Depending on your income, it may or may not pay for itself in due time. However, as much as there is a competitor product that is significantly less expensive, I have not tried such a product to give any real recommendations on whether this is worth the premium or not.

    – Instruction manual especially for selecting your grind fineness tends to be extremely unclear, even with customer service assisting you. Forces the consumer to take more time to somehow correctly interpret the grind settings for the product rather than spending more time experimenting with specific grind settings to find their own preferred fineness. This is at the time I purchased the product.

    – Manual only downloadable from the manufacturer’s website when you scan the provided QR code in the packaged product. Even then, finding the correct grind settings for the product you own can be a little fuzzy at first.

    – No instruction as to which side of the two-ended brush is adequate for what kind of cleaning jobs: there’s a coarsely-bristled and a finely-bristled brush. This ends up forcing the consumer to take wild jabs and guesses at what their purpose is really for.

    – Finding your “0” can remain unclear every time you reassemble the burr mechanism as per maintenance. This is a mild gripe as all it really takes is making sure you pay attention on where the burr “blades” end up becoming fully tightened at—this is also mentioned in the product manual.

    – Plastic or acrylic transparent window at the crank reduces the overall quality of the product. I’m not sure who specifically asked for this, or why this was greenlit, but a similar material akin to the entire burr grinder would have been highly preferable, since I don’t think it’s really necessary to have a quick peek in. This is prone to being scratched, and can make the visibility of the beans rather cloudy if it keeps getting scratched by the bristles of the provided brush. Also can reduce potential torque since some lighter roasts tend to have the most resistance.

    – Crank relies on a friction fit rather than a more secured fit (e.g. a screw fit). Not terribly bad in relative comparison to cheaper options, but a premium product such as this deserves something this simple.

    – Hopper holds far less in beans than the magnetic bin. On top of that, there seems to be something built in that divides the entire hopper. I can only speculate that this is for durability purposes and for no other purpose beyond that.

    – (Mild complaint) Bin tends to demand extra cleaning since the grinds end up sticking to the sides of it. Not a huge fan of it, but it’s not a huge impedance, either.

    – Rubber grip tends to lose its adhesive properties over time, however this is more or less a “wear-and-tear” situation.

    Possible remedies:

    * Please make sure the grind settings are 1:1 (exact) with how the numbering scheme on the dial works, especially in relation to the product manual itself. It’s utterly inconvenient to ask for customer service just to understand and clarify the highly arbitrary numbers on the grind setting sheet. Otherwise, the customer will not understand that the large sized numbers on the document actually mean full turns, and the numbers in between those larger numbers are supposed to mean the amount of ticks required after each full turn, and will instead just tick to those numbers on the grind’s dial, giving them a highly suboptimal coffee-drinking experience based on their preferred brewing method(s). I do recall bringing similar comments up to a customer service agent I have inquired this about, so I assume this was since taken into consideration. (Note: I rechecked the manual, and I do believe this was updated for the current version of this product.)

    * I absolutely recommend that 1Zpresso avoid using an acrylic or plastic screen in terms of the crank mechanism for their future products. I can see that it can be a potential point of failure.

Overall, the product is pretty solid, but the high asking price and some of the weird caveats can potentially turn plenty of customers away. I could absolutely recommend this if your budget and needs allow it.

EDIT (10 JULY 2023): I have checked the entirety of this product’s page, and it seems they have done some significant changes to the product since I last bought it. However, as I do not commit to “buying the latest thing”, I unfortunately am unable to give any particular comparisons between the one I have, and the one they’re currently selling.
