I like the fact that it has a “calibrate” feature where you can adjust the grind such that you can produce ground good for espresso.

It also pisses me off that it has a calibrate feature but it is hidden such that you have to disassemble the dang thing in order to make adjustments; It pisses me off even more is the factory default is set to the lowest setting which produces ground so course that is not suitable for any type of brew. If it had been set to medium then I wouldn’t have to mess with it from the get go and would likely satisfy the majority of the customers. Had it been up to my wife, it would have gone back in less than a heart beat.

Lastly, it makes me scratch my head when I had to use the timer dial. I wish I could listen in on their design discussions.

Recommendation: yes, if you are accustomed to tinkering with things and are willing to rip it apart and mess with the “calibrate” feature

This coffee burr grinder replaces one that had been very dependable for over two decades. So, I was concerned about getting a new one. The Baratza Virtuoso has met my expectations. This is a quality machine that does the job it promises.

I was skeptical. My old Cuisinart coffee grinder broke after 14 years. I was going to replace it in kind, but read up on what makes a good grinder. Then I got caught up in it and I wanted a decent one so I decided to buy it. I thought it would be marginally better. I was wrong. I had no idea how much better coffee tastes with a good grinder. I buy great coffee beans and this grinder makes far better coffee with the same coffee maker. As for its structure, I had difficult time putting the top that holds the beans on to the base and thought while I was trying to get it to fit that it was cheap thin plastic. However, once that plastic piece is is on, I don’t need to deal with it again so despite that…I highly recommend this grinder. It makes wonderful coffee. Not bitter. Flavorful. I am very happy with it. Life is too short not to drink great coffee!

Since I enjoy coffee tremendously, I decided to up my grinding game. After some research, I learned this is one of the best “home” burr grinders on the market. The company’s heritage and commitment to service and support tipped the scales for me. Let me tell you this is not a cheap as in dollars unit, so the overall sturdiness, build quality and versatility impressed me. Ease of assembling and maintenance is a bonus. And it’s not even that loud, relatively speaking. With 40 grind settings and programmable timer, it takes some trialing to dial in correct settings to your taste. And when you nail it, you are consistently rewarded with rich, flavourful coffee. That is, until you try a different blend. But it’s also about the journey, right?

The product is super-securely packaged. Assembly is a bit tricky but not complicated if you take the time to read the directions. The results, though, are definitely worth the time, effort and price. By changing only one adjustment (time and grind) at a time, I’ve been able to achieve the best flavor from each of the coffees we’ve tried. I keep a chart of the best settings for each coffee. One of the best features it that the grinder keeps the last time setting even if it’s unplugged. The grind setting is absolutely consistent. Don’t fuss about the recommended grind settings. Use them only as a starting point and find your own preferences from there. Will never go back to using pre-ground coffee.

I replaced my 17 year old (17!) Capresso Infinity grinder when it started producing fines that clogged the coffee filter no matter the grind settings – the upper burr was nearly smooth! I bought the Baratza Virtuoso+ based on the NYT Wirecutter review and the customer ratings. I had no trouble assembling the unit, including the silicone gasket. I like having the digital timer to control the amount ground – it saves me weighing the beans every day. At a setting of 20, it produces 46 +/- 1 gram in 21.3 seconds. I am producing better tasting coffee with my Bonavita connoisseur than ever before! I find the noise level about the same as for the Capressa, measured for the Virtuoso+ at 82.3 dB peak, 74.5 average, 1 foot away from the unit.

Baratza has a great reputation that is well deserved, and this machine works like I hoped it would. It consistently produces the right grind for my morning brew. It’s louder than most grinders I’ve had, but I’ve never had a quiet coffee grinder anyway.

Get one. Once you figure out how much ground coffee you’ll need for your brew and its grind, you won’t have to adjust the grinder for your favorite grind, every time.

I was disappointed when I realized that my older (jan 2017) “Capresso 565 Infinity” grinder gives me a definitively finer grind then the brand new Baratza Virtuoso+, and you can get the Capresso Zinc Die-Cast (565.05) for ~100$ less, or an ABS casing (560.01), for less then half the price of the Baratza !
    Both are conical steel burr.
A finer grind gives you access to more coffee varieties to brew as espresso : Some coffees require a finer grind or even the best espresso maker will fail (case to be made for a pressurized portafilter to brew any coffee as espresso) !

After I could no longer nurse my 10 year old Breville grinder along any further, I bought the Virtuoso+ after reading several recommendations about its features, build quality, and price/performance ratio. It feels solid, heavy for its size, and it fits under my cabinets. It looks nice on my countertop to boot. I use it for pour over and Aeropress half the year, and it is great being able to dial in the amount of coffee and grind via the built in timer and the rotating hopper. This lets me easily switch between the amount and grind I need for the two types of hot coffee I make. Most of the time, making coffee needs to be a brainless activity, and this reduces the demand for precious brain resources by just getting the activity right with a single button push.

The other half of the year I give it a “hot supper” every couple weeks when I coarsely grind 2 1/2 pounds of coffee for batches of cold brew. This takes about 20 minutes or so, maybe just a touch faster than Breville. The Baratza breezes through the task without getting noticeably hot, though that might just be due to the placement of the motor or the thickness. Support told me that this sustained load can increase the wear of the parts on the machine, but I’m not too concerned. More on that later.

Speaking of support, they’re excellent: quick, friendly, and willing to help. I contacted them about a year into my ownership as things seemed to have slowed a bit from the previous year, even after a cleaning. Though the burrs should be good for 500 pounds of coffee, they offered to send me a new burr for free to see if it fixed my problem.

On top of that, Baratza builds repairability into their machines so they can keep going after many years. You can buy parts for their machines and they have instructional videos on maintenance. Right to repair is important to me, and since many companies are designing their products against this, it is refreshing to see a company buck the trend. I don’t expect to need to buy another grinder, but if I do, Baratza’s offerings will be my first choice.

It’s an amazing grinder if you brew coffee. Obviously, it’s not something new I’m saying, the reputation of Baratza is well known.

But if you want to make great espresso, this isn’t a grinder for you. I’ve still rated it 5 starts because it’s not supposed to be an Espresso grinder in the first place. It can grind fine enough for espresso but you can not dial it in properly for espresso. But overall, it’s an amazing grinder for brewing with all other methods.
