The things I love about it
There are three main things I love about this machine - the value, quality, and convenience. Value: My wife and I did a very rough value estimation to determine how much each drink might cost us over the span of three years (provided the machine lasts that long) and it came down to somewhere around ~$1.00+ / drink. Ok, so cheap coffee... great. But our excitement over this fun estimate was that not only was it $3-4 cheaper than starbucks, the drinks are WAY better. I've even grown to like our homemade espresso drinks more than the most expensive craft coffee shop I've been to. I don't know quite what it is - but it's just better. So, the incredible value of $1.00 / drink and the extreme quality put this as one of the most useful and practical appliances we have and use. Oh and we have pulled an average of 2-3 drinks from it every day since October. I've even used it for 9 drinks in a day before (although I don't recommend... spending 2 hours making coffee wasn't fun). So, the value mixed with the quality makes this one of my favorite purchases ever. Now for the convenience factor. I personally didn't want to have to do much research or really have 2 different machines on our counter, so I love the fact that it's got everything all in one and I've (maybe because I've never tried a better grinder or machine) never desired separate components. Like I said, I like my own homemade drinks more than any coffee shop where their equipment is... well worth more than my car. Who am I kidding - worth more than 2-3 of my cars. I'm not quick to give things 5 stars and while this machine certainly isn't perfect, because it's so good at what it does with such low cost (relatively speaking) and we get so much use out of it, it earned the 5 stars.
What don't I love about it
To give a bit of background here's my coffee journey. 1992 (birth year) - 2017 I never drank coffee; 2017 - 2018 drank coffee from Ninja Single Serve Coffee Bar, 2018 - now Breville Barista Express. So, overall, I'm still very young in my coffee drinking experience. So, when I first opened the Breville machine and read the manual, I was overwhelmed with everything I needed to do to pull a good shot and steam some milk for a latte. My first attempt was about 20 minutes before we needed to leave for church and I made two horrible lattes. I was overwhelmed and stressed that this wasn't what I expected it to be. So, when we got home after church, I tried again. Still, not a great drink. But as I slowly did research and learned a few top level techniques, things became less scary. So, it's not easy to use and it is time consuming to make a drink. But... as another reviewer mentioned, that's kind of the fun of it! I know thoroughly enjoy it (making at most 2 at a time... any more is a little much). It was well worth the learning curve to get to where we are now.
I've joked with my wife that we need to start setting aside $10 / month so that we can buy our next one when this one inevitably dies. But it's only 50% a joke. If (when) that day comes, I do expect to purchase this machine again. Coffee is delicious and to get the best drink (again better than any coffee shop I've been to) for this cost, this consistently and frequently, makes this the most valuable and used appliance we own. It's well worth the price-tag.

After reading several Amazon reviews from satisfied customers I purchased the Barista Express renewed. It arrived in one week, protectively packed and looks brand new. After following the set up instructions in the manual I began experimenting with freshly roasted coffee beans. I quickly discovered that this machine doesn't like lighter roasted beans, such as a Light Italian Roast purchased from a local coffee roaster. Unable to achieve decent pressure and yielded sour tasting shots. Seems the medium to dark roasts work much better. I also watched several YouTube videos by a Barista Express owner who did a series on the different aspects/problem solving for the machine. Much better than the Breville company videos.
As to Breville's customer service, I had received two dual-walled one cup filter baskets, instead of one 2 cup and a 1 cup basket. I emailed Breville and they promptly sent out the missing basket. Also sent out a complementary 12oz. pack of coffee beans.
The machine comes with a 6 month warranty so I purchased the additional 3-year warranty. So far its performed like new, well worth taking a chance and saving $300.
All my research showed that the Breville espresso maker was top rated by every reviewer. However, the price tag on their espresso machine was way out of my price range.
Discovering that Amazon offered a certified refurbished model, at nearly half the cost of a new machine, made my day. It arrived in super careful packaging and came with all the accessories included with a new machine purchase. There is not a scratch or dent on it. From my careful examining it appears brand new. This espresso maker is a solid, sturdy piece of machinery. (Again, I'm comparing it to the Italian brand that was $100 less.) It really is built to last and makes a fantastic cup of espresso and cappuccino. The built-in burr grinder ensures a very fresh cup of coffee first thing in the morning. The frothing wand makes my cappuccino look and taste like it came from a coffee shop. Seriously. The machine is very quick, far faster than that Italian machine I returned.
This espresso maker does not disappoint. It is an amazing piece of design and engineering. Lovely and efficient to behold. It's eliminated the counter clutter as it takes up less space than the previous occupants: coffee maker, grinder, and frother. Do not hesitate buying a refurbished Breville. You'll save yourself a ton of money. This company's products are first-rate...even their refurbished ones.
My wife and I have thoroughly enjoyed out machine and have become very accustomed to its use over the years.
We found that you can make some really good tea by using the pressurized baskets. No more over steeped, bitter teas... I'm sure that blasphemy for tea drinkers to hear but man, its really easy, quick, and makes a great cup.
