The good–quietest grinder I’ve ever had and it grinds uniformly. I replaced my Capressa grinder since I got tired of having coffee grinds stuck behind the cup and electrostatically clinging and spreading everywhere on a daily basis. The bad–the grind selector ring (coarse to fine) that rotates to select the one you want, moves by itself during the grinding process, back from my medium preference toward coarse. It’s loose and there’s no way I see to tighten it. Also, the beans hang up in the hopper every single time. I’ll hear the burrs freely spinning because no beans are dropping into them. Every single day I’ve got to stand there and shake the grinder to get some to drop. I’ve never had this problem with another grinder. Finally, I can’t get SMEG to give me an answer on this stuff. I’m just about ready to return it.
Update: After supplying a video of the moving grind selector ring, a photo of the serial number, a pdf of my purchase from Amazon and a detailed form explaining why I wasn’t happy with a poorly designed product, it takes over a week for their “customer service” to get me a status of my claim. I’m told they’ll replace it but don’t know when. They’ll “notify” me. I’ve demanded a refund instead. I suspect I will have a another update on this review. Here’s what graces my kitchen in the meantime.
2nd Update, about 2 weeks+: Without any email notification, I had UPS notify me that I had a package to sign for, a week after being left without any idea what SMEG would do. I received a new unit and with this one the grinder selection ring doesn’t move while it grinds. That’s good. The bad is that the coffee bean drop from the hopper into the grinder still isn’t consistent on the new unit and that is an issue with this model for me. Since I only use it once in the morning, waiting to shake it while it grinds isn’t too inconvenient now but I shouldn’t have to with a properly designed & tested model, especially at $300. I can’t really endorse buying one but don’t think seeking a refund is worth the aggravation to me. You’ll have to decide for yourself. I does look cool, though, and I like the catch bottle for the grinds.
Update 7/24/21: The 2nd unit sent has the same problems. The grind selection ring moves while grinding and beans get held up in the hopper daily. Before I’d been sent the 2nd unit, I’d demanded reimbursement and ended up with the 2nd unit and my money back as well. Frankly, I do use it now because it does grind well and there’s no stray grounds on the counter. I baby it for the 30-40 seconds of grinding and then brew some great coffee. I deserve it for the experience overall. Yours, who knows?

From the first grind, this grinder was all it was built up to be. So quiet I can grind in the morning before my wife gets up (and guys know how important that is!)
And there is no mess, not even in the collection jar! The magnetic plate underneath does the trick.
This machine is replacing the very loud and messy Cuisinart grinder that I have had for years. Glad I did the research. I have to experiment with what grind level to use. On the CA I had to use #6 to get it right, but #5 was a bit too fine. Moved to 7 for a bit.
You won’t regret buying it!

This review is for anyone who loves coffee and considers it a very important part of their life. This review is for people like me who look forward to that first cup o’ joe in the morning even right before going to bed at night. It’s also for people who don’t mind spending more for quality that will last a long time and that will give them the best results. OK, I’m a coffee geek. I have a Technivorm Moccamaster and a Ratio Eight; both top quality automatic drip coffee makers. I’ve also owned coffee grinders that match that quality. For a few years I used the Breville Smart Grinder which was a quality machine and replaced it with a Baratza Virtuoso, also a great machine. Either one would be a smart buy with long lasting value. I have a lot of experience with them and wasn’t sorry I bought them. Now, on to the SMEG Retro Style. It’s above and beyond!! I got the one in black. It’s a beautiful machine. With such a big build up I’ll get right to the point now. My jaw dropped open in disbelief the very first time I used it this morning. First off, It’s a LOT quieter than either the Breville or the Baratza. Secondly, it’s SO easy to use. I set the wheel in front to 8 cups and moved the very easy grind adjustment lever to a couple notches past medium. I put the handy collector cup in, pressed start and couldn’t believe how SMOOTHLY and QUICKLY my beans went thru this AMAZING machine. After it was done, the timer was right on at my “8” setting, I took out the collector container and there was ZERO MESS, ZERO STATIC which was a bit of a problem with the Breville and the Virtuoso though not a deal breaker. The SMEG however left NO MESS. Yes, it’s more expensive than the two others but trust me; this has to be the absolute BEST quality home use coffee grinder on the market today. It’s fairly new. It deserves to be number one on the list of conical burr grinders. You can just hear the quality as it incredibly efficiently does its work. The materials are top notch. I am just SO impressed with this piece of machinery that I had to sit down and write this. Go straight for THIS ONE. Great job SMEG. It’s the best thing to come out of Italy since spaghetti sauce. I LOVE THIS!!!!! Buy it and you’ll agree. It’s a “can’t miss.” I wish I could have given it SIX STARS. By the way, the coffee tasted GREAT!! **Update a few months later: this grinder is STILL TOP NOTCH. I still can’t believe how quick and quiet it is opposed to a couple of other expensive grinders I’ve owned. It’s a joy to grind beans with this each morning. The ONLY thing I’ve found on the negative side, in case you’re a perfectionist, is that the ON/OFF printing on the power button rubs off after awhile. It’s no biggie. I simply hand rubbed the remainder of the printing off and there’s just the bland metal face on it now. This is an exceptional coffee bean grinder and I’m looking forward to years of service.

I got this one it was a used in acceptable condition, but it’s great!! I love it!! It’s cute and makes great ground coffee
Zoe Dagneault –
It’s Start / Stop function is far from seamless. Once it works it does do well at grinding the beans, but it seems there are electrical hiccups with getting the grinder to function. Does not always start when you want, but unplugging and re-plugging seems to help. Otherwise, lovely to look at,
G.

I’m so glad I splurged on this. All the usual coffee grinders on the market makes a huge mess. The grounds invariably leak from collection, somehow, encrusting themselves in hard to clean places. This device was carefully engineered. There is a magnetic metal plate at the bottom of the collection area that can be removed, cleaned, and replaced in seconds. The plastic collection beaker is somehow, anti-static, and I’ve had no issues pouring out varying degrees of grounds–a strange reason to splurge for a coffee grinder (other than the aesthetics, which others here will attest to at length), but very important to me.

Absolutely just what I wanted. Gorgeous frosted pale blue. Looks great as an accessory left on the counter. Is easy to assemble and easy to use. I love Smeg products. Cute and a pleasure to use in the kitchen. Coffee grind settings are accurate and the machine is relatively quiet (compared to other grinders).

It’s not just looks, it is the best grinder I have used and well worth the money. It’s pretty, stylish, sturdy, and works well. It does not get any of that that powder buildup that other grinders do, no need to clean out the unit after every grind as it stays clean
