Buying Guide: Bialetti – Moka Express: Iconic Stovetop Espresso Maker

    Introduction

Welcome to our buying guide for the Bialetti Moka Express: Iconic Stovetop Espresso Maker. This famous coffee pot is a must-have for coffee enthusiasts who want to experience the authentic Italian way of making coffee. In this guide, we will provide you with all the essential information to help you choose the right model and use it to make the perfect cup of Italian coffee.

    Choosing the Right Size

The Bialetti Moka Express comes in different sizes, measured in espresso cups. Consider how many cups of coffee you typically make at a time. If you are a single coffee drinker, the 1-cup size (2 oz – 60 ml) would be perfect. For larger households or gatherings, you may want to opt for a larger size. Choose the size that best fits your needs.

    Compatible Stove Types

The Bialetti Moka Express is compatible with gas, electric, and induction stoves. However, for induction stoves, you will need to purchase the Bialetti induction adapter plate separately. Ensure that your stove is compatible with the Moka Express before making a purchase.

    Using the Moka Express

Once you have your Moka Express, follow these simple steps to make a delicious cup of Italian coffee:

    1. Fill the boiler up to the safety valve with water. Avoid overfilling the boiler as this may affect the brewing process.
    2. Add ground coffee to the filter basket without pressing it down.
    3. Screw the top and bottom parts of the Moka Express together tightly.
    4. Place the Moka Express on your stovetop over medium heat.
    5. As soon as you hear the Moka Express gurgle and coffee starts to come out, turn off the heat.
    6. Wait for a few moments to let the coffee finish brewing and the remaining water rise to the top chamber.
    7. Once all the water has risen to the top, you can serve the coffee immediately.

    Cleaning and Maintenance

After each use, rinse the Moka Express with clean water. Avoid using detergent as it may leave residue that affects the taste of future brews. Do not put the Moka Express in the dishwasher, as it may cause irreparable damage to the aluminum and alter the flavor of the coffee.

This is a perfect size for having a few people over. But I still can’t quite figure out what kind of 12 cups it makes. I guess 2 1/2 8 ounce cups that’s not enough for 12 people.

Easy to get high octane caffeine to the masses. Used it on a van trip 5 people camping. It performed great.

Es demasiado pequeña, tuve que comprar la de 3 tazas, es para alguien que guste solo un sorbo de café o una taza muy diluida

This makes coffee somewhere between Americano and Espresso. It’s strong, which makes it excellent with milk. That includes over ice where it maintains much of its flavor, and you can then put together an iced latte without much effort.

It’s as simple as filling the bottom with water, filling the middle with ground coffee, and turning on the stovetop heat to medium/low When the gurgling stops, pour it into your cup.

I think this method is the best on a budget. And compare this to a Keurig or Drip Coffee maker where the “iced” setting just brews slower, more bitter coffee.

      tl;dr
      – The one to get for just for one person( one cup . I like it fresh 😀 )
      – The closest I could get to my office espresso machine with limited space
      – Did not really want to invest so much in an espresso machine. Considering if some one drinks less coffee, I would definitely not want to have a big microwave size machine sitting on my counter.
      – If you love to drink coffee, don’t want to get the espresso machine, still want some good coffee, get it.
      – IF YOU HATE MEASURING YOUR COFFEE, STILL WANT COFFEE, GET THISSS.
      – I hate measuring coffee because it feels like a science experiment or baking when I start measuring. 😡
      – The one-cup version will look like/feel like a toy if you have big hands but it works great.
      – tldr became too big.
      – I am sorry
      – Last thing, JUST GET A MOKA POT AND COFFEE FROTHER AND YOU HAVE GOOD COFFEE AT HOME ON A BUDGET AND A SETUP THAT WONT TAKE A LOT OF SPACE. TRY SWITCHING COFFEE BLEND TILL YOU FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. ( You should probably be using espresso grind or just a little course than that. )

I really really like Coffee…… but not the one I make at home.
Before the moka pot, I tried aeropress, french press, drip ,french press … Basically a few things which I could find that were cheap and did not take much space in my tiny house.
During quarantine, I am drinking way more coffee at home and I really want a good cup of coffee every day.
Earlier, I used to make all my coffee at office using their fancy-ass espresso machine. It was intimidating at first but I once asked one of the office staff who was cleaning the machine to teach me how to use it. It was the best 5-minute training I have ever had. I was consistently able to make the coffee shop like coffee ( at least close to that).
Now that I am drinking more coffee at home, I just couldn’t find something that would match the espresso machine. So far, Moka pot is the only thing that has worked for me.
Also, this is the one to get if need it for A SINGLE PERSON.
also, you are not really supposed to half fill or something and try to make less coffee in a bigger moka pot.

QUICK TUTORIAL THAT WORKS FOR ME (Might not for you):
      – Boil some water in the microwave in a glass till it boils
      – Fill the Moka pot till the water level hits the round valve.
      – Fill the funnel with coffee lightly packed. Don’t overfill.
      – Screw on the top properly. If some water leaks the first time on stove, tighten it more.
      – Put the Moka pot on a stove top (Medium heat) with lid open. Keep it on the edge of the burner to avoid burning/getting the handle hot.
      – Take it off heat when the coffee stream is thin and blonde.
      – Add whatever you drink it with. I add some steamed milk.
( COFFEE GRIND/TYPE IS IMPORTANT. I found that one of the coffee gave me very watered down results whereas the other one gave me great results. As far as I know, you are supposed to use good espresso ground or just a little course than that. I can’t remember the name but I will update the review with the exact one that worked for me later. Till then, try a few)

The coffee taste good even though it is not as ‘clean’ as filtered coffee.
Anyway the pot leaks. There is a rubber seal that is just not good or not good enough so that’s that.

I should have followed the rule that only things I’d buy as Italian made are ice cream or pizza. Everything else is a nice design but likely questionable quality.

Reminds me of growing up in my Italian household. My mom would always fire this up when we had “company” over! I also have childhood memories of seeing these in homes in Italy just about everywhere. The quality seems identical to the original ones from many years ago. The price is not bad either. But shop around. For some reason, the price fluctuates drastically for same exact item listed in different places on Amazon. Even for the ones sold and shipped from Amazon.

Note: For all the Espresso “connoisseurs” out there, this will not give you a crema head at the top of your espresso shots if that’s what you are looking for. This is just a traditional stovetop Espresso coffee pot. The water builds up pressure in the bottom chamber and pushes its way to the top as it passes through the espresso grounds. Even without the crema, the flavor is great if you use good quality (non-burnt) coffee beans ground correctly. You actually wind up pulling out a fairly dry puck when cleaning the pot. If it comes out really wet, you’re doing something wrong. (Too coarse, or not packed tight enough.) Just my opinion…

Gostei muito. Prático e fica muito gostoso o café. Porém pegaria uma maior. Pois 1 xícara para o italiano são 2 dedos de café.

We have 3 of these in different sizes and they are all wonderful. They make an awesome pot of coffee. We use these every single day.
