Segundo Coffee Lab has been a three-year journey exploring different coffee shops to see what was on offer while enjoying a love of coffee.
In March 2020 before our shutdown, we got the wonderful opportunity to visit Guatemala and explore the world of coffee from harvesting to the families of farmers who opened their doors and welcomed us.
What we saw forever changed how we viewed coffee and When we came back from Guatemala. “ I told my husband, I want to open our own coffee shop”. He looked at me and said you’re crazy. If you know me I don’t take no for an answer.
I believe that anything can be achieved with hard work and passion. In late fall we decided if we don’t do this now we never will. Fast forward here we are a year later building our brick-and-mortar Coffee shop.
The Segundo Coffee Lab name came from my husband Abuelita who lived in the Second Ward community in Houston TX and he would hear his Abuelita saying Segundo Barrio which she was referring to Second Ward.
So we wanted to make sure we kept the Segundo Barrio culture alive. We added Segundo to the name. That’s how the idea of adding Spanish names to our signature drinks came about. One of those drinks is called La Mexicana, which is a latte with espresso, honey, cinnamon, and homemade vanilla bean.
What makes Segundo Coffee lab? We offer an urban-industrial environment. We have a coffee bar we serve out of a shipping container. Next to it we have our cannabis store which also can infuse any of our drinks with our own CBD line. We live and believe in the community of Houston, we want to make every single person who walks into the coffee shop feel welcomed like family. Thanks to everyone who walks into our shop this wouldn’t be possible without you all.
Segundo Coffee Lab is now serving delicious coffee and having wonderful conversations with you all.
Segundo Coffee Lab will be located at
711 Milby St Ste 35 Houston TX 77023.
Yours Truly Segundo Coffee Lab team.

Barbarossa coffee is a third-gen coffee house and roaster founded in 2017. Since then, their popularity has exploded and their fan base borders on cult-following. This neighborhood gem opened their second location at the genesis of the pandemic, but managed to transcend the difficulties many small businesses faced during the 2020 year, and they are poised to become a major player in the Houston coffee scene.
Their footprint has expanded in large part to a savvy online presence and high-quality service both online and in-shop. Their offered syphon, chemex, V60, and aeropress methods are executed adeptly, and their take on international styles such as Turkish, Vietnamese, Cuban, and Freddo espresso/cappuccino are worth the trip.
Whether it’s the modern cozy aesthetic you want to find yourself studying in, or the 18 single origin beans available to try, the experience here is one-of-a-kind and worth ditching your go-to coffee chain for.

Houston lacks cultural spaces. Day 6 wanted to fill in that gap by providing a unique vibe. Something you can experience only by walking into the shop. Coffee is the perfect drink for dates, business, and great conversation – Day 6 is focused on curating a space that encourages all of these things for the city. We prioritize the vibe, from the smell of the coffee to the music playlist. Our goal is to ensure that customers leave with more positive energy than when they came in.
In an effort to showcase the best of Houston culture we have created things such as the “Texas Latte” (latte that has a pecan sweetness) and the “Brisket Kolache” (classic Texas pastry filled with brisket and cheese)
We offer a number of classic espresso drinks as well as specialty mimosas which include our lavender lemonade, mango lemonade, and strawberry lemonade mimosas.

Giant Leap Coffee – where one small sip can change your whole universe! A third-wave, space themed coffee shop in Uptown Park, Giant Leap is a little jewel box with both inventive and traditional coffee options.
The space, fully built and designed by the owners themselves, has a “retrofuture” vibe- modern but familiar. In keeping with its name and design, the Seasonal Spacials are space themed as well. The International Spice Station is a fall favorite, but the shop draws on plenty of Houston flavor inspiration as well. A take on the Café Sua Da, a Calamansi Lemonade, and a Horchata Cold Brew echo the diversity and complexity of the surrounding city.
Giant Leap sources beans from local roasters, as well as offering a star-studded selection of monthly guest roasters. Keep a look out for their all day café in the East End, Café Louie, slated to open later this year!

Covo coffee is an amazing little coffee shop serving superb V60 coffee as well as Siphon and Aeropress coffee. Something I always admire in a coffee shop is their selection of brew methods. But if you’re looking for a more traditional coffee they’ve got all the ol’ faithful espresso drinks everyone loves.
You can grab a bite to eat while you’re there enjoying a light lunch and the atmosphere is definitely relaxed with some excellent music normally coming through the speakers.
Their roastery is pushing boundaries on sustainability by providing their coffee in glass bottles that can be recycled or traded in at either of their cafes for a greener footprint with your coffee.
They currently have two locations:

Catalina Coffee is a superb little coffee shop doing exactly what a coffee shop should, serving great coffee and delicious pastries.
They have all the coffee you'd expect as well as a few unique drinks but what’s really special is the Gold Cup coffee, a coffee made from a Gold Cup machine that automatically adjusts brew settings to the coffee being used to give you a truly delicious cup of coffee.
Sometimes you don’t need to go over the top and offer everything, more often than not keeping it simple and doing a superb job is a much better plan, and that’s just what Catalina are doing.

Spacious cafe with a nice feel and top-quality coffee focused on using coffee that’s in season for maximum flavor and freshness into your cup.
A selection of espresso-based coffees as well as pour-over coffee and several teas to choose from. Plus a delicious selection of breakfast and lunch dishes.
One particularly great dish to try is the blacksmith plate which is: Biscuit or croissant, two eggs, avocado, home fries, bacon or sausage. A superb start to the day or superb lunch especially when it’s paired with a wonderful cup of coffee.

If you call yourself a coffee lover then you need to get to Uncle Beans Coffee, not just because it sounds like a Spiderman character but because their coffee is wonderful.
Serving all the coffee you'd expect plus some other exciting drinks, micro lot coffee if you want something special, house cold brew if you want something strong and combine them for a micro lot cold brew if it’s a hot day.
Fuel yourself with some overnight oats or you can even get a 96oz coffee tote if you need coffee for everybody (or if you’re really tired). Well worth a visit.

We are a Specialty Coffee Shop. That means we only use quality beans as detailed by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). The SCA sets a very high standard from the farmer to the roaster, and we are the last link in the chain. It's all about quality and quality does not come cheap.
Our proudest moments are always when people come into the shop and on leaving say that was one of the best cups of coffee they have ever had, or when we are out and about in Houston and someone mentions our shop and the great coffee we serve.
From day one we have always made our own syrups (yes, some people like to add things to our specialty coffees!). We have always tried to be different with these, and we believe we were the first in Houston to introduce the Honey Lavender Latte.
It’s certainly our seasonal board that always draws people’s interest when they are first visiting the shop such as our fall special the Smoked Rosemary Cortado made using high-quality Texas honey from Texas bees as a base with a twist that's worth seeing for yourself

Be Included
If you would like to nominate a cafe to be included or you yourself are a coffee shop or roasters based in Houston then please get in touch by emailing [email protected]
This is an ever growing list and we’re always looking for more great cafes to add.
How we select the choices
We are a small organisation with specific opinions, who are we to say what coffee is better? So we take to reddit where people endlessly discuss which coffee shop is the best.
This starts off the list and then more coffee shops can be added over time with a voting system so that the absolute best get voted to the top by locals and visitors to the area alike.
